Literacy is critical to building strong communities. Without literacy, adults must follow others, wait for answers, and hope for opportunities. Literacy is the foundation of education, and when an adult reads, his or her children read. When families read, our communities are stronger.
Literacy Volunteers of Essex/Franklin Counties (LVEF) has been providing one-on-one literacy tutoring at no cost to adults over the age of 16 for over 30 years. Although we are small, we have a big impact on the students we serve, the dedicated volunteer tutors, and on the community as a whole.
When 43% of adults with the lowest literacy levels live in poverty, we know that helping adults read, write, and calculate better not only helps build their own self-value, but also their economic outcomes. Unfortunately, thousands of residents in Essex and Franklin counties read at or below a fourth grade reading level.
